Canyon is the horse we have had the longest, nine years now. I sure have some stories to tell and I’m sure if Canyon, could talk he would tell you a few too.

Canyon is like no other …this is just a short synopsis of our time together.

We bought Canyon as a coming four year old. He was halter broke and had bred a few mares that was the extent of his training.  I had never owned a stallion prior to purchasing him. I had handled and rode only a few.

This horse has taught me so much. No, I can’t say that it has always been easy, actually it has been at times the hardest thing, I’ve ever done! But it is now, one of the most gratifying experiences of my life right behind watching my children grow.

To get on this horse any day, any time. And travel any length of miles. To see the things that you can only, see from aboard your favorite trusty steed.

Here are a few things that I have seen from atop Canyon’s back…

Lavender and gold wild flowers, growing on the moss topped mountain rock, blooming in summer sun. The course, fragmented rock bluff vistas. Watching the trees, with the seasons change, or the parts there of, that have been blown asunder from a recent storm that has passed through. The butterfly on the flower, that grows near the rivers edge. The paper-thin ice with little beads of water dancing underneath like bugs under glass! The elk or moose that trots away because, you scared it more than it scared you. “Wow” all this enjoyment comes from atop the horse that “I” broke and trained!! selah , (means think on that…) I certainly hope you have enjoyed seeing some of the GOD given beauty that lies out on the mountain trails in North Idaho!

We use Canyon, to compete in many different areas, from endurance races of 25 to75 miles completing most successfully. He also has been shown at one regional show where we gained a half point in Hunter in Hand.

This is not all we do with him, we also have competed in local team penning events, Cut n’ Sort is Canyon’s favorite! He has won reserve champion awards and many placings, with us entering only about half of the competitions, due to other commitments.

He is excellent in competitions or as a family horse. He is friendly to all, even children, letting them pet and ride him. We have delivered wood to our neighbor, and used him for family fun, skijoring and Christmas Caroling. We have even used him to pony young unbroken colts…

This is just a little about Canyon and our relationship, he is in the truest sense of the word VERSATILE as were and are many of the horses of this GREAT breed!

This same character is what we expect from his foals, his color, abilities and disposition, qualifying, him as an excellent horse, at work or play!

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my wonderful equine friend, and a few of the trails we have traveled. I invite you to write and tell me a little about your horse as well.

Appily’yours,
Kathy & Canyon

Cat is gaited - you can see the lateral pairs of legs going together in a few of the photos.  Catloma is by Chelseas Ghost and out of our Ruby.  Cat's sire lines include foundation Appy greats like Dun Roven Chelsea’s Image, Chief Chelsea, who traces tail male through Desert Dancer, Pharoah and Winged Hawk to Spotted Eagle and Fire Flies, scions of the Ghost Wind line.   Ulrich Kitten III, is the dam of Chelsea’s Ghost, she is a product of the well known Ulrich Ranch of Cody, Wy.  She is sired by Ben Buzz, a tail male descendant of the Starbucks Leopard. Kitten was a known shuffler and passed her running walk on to many of her offspring.
